Most Aurora homeowners start calling pool builders on the first warm weekend in April. By then, the best construction slots for the season are often already spoken for. If you want to be swimming in your own backyard next summer, the planning should start now, while the leaves are still coming down.
Here are the questions we hear most often in the fall, and how we answer them.

Can you build a pool in the fall or winter in Ontario?
Construction depends on ground and weather conditions, and most major excavation in York Region happens from spring through fall. Design, however, has no season. Fall and winter are when the decisions that shape your project get made: layout, pool shape, materials, lighting, landscaping and budget.
When those choices are finished before spring, your project is ready to move as soon as conditions allow, instead of waiting in line while the design is still being argued over.
What should be decided before construction season?
A finished plan for an Aurora pool project usually covers:
- Pool placement — sun exposure, views from the house, privacy and distance from property lines
- Shape and features — entry steps, tanning ledge, spa, water features, automation and heating
- The surrounding patio — enough space for loungers, dining and safe walking
- Grading and drainage — where water goes once the pool and patio are in
- Fencing — the pool enclosure and gates
- Landscaping and lighting — so the backyard feels finished, not just “pool installed”
Our 2D and 3D design rendering lets you see all of this together before anything is dug.
Do I need a permit for a pool in Aurora?
Yes. The Town of Aurora requires a pool enclosure permit before work starts on a pool, under its Fence By-law. A regular backyard fence doesn’t need a permit in Aurora, but a pool enclosure does, and the Town asks for a final inspection after the pool and enclosure are complete, before the pool is filled.
The application needs drawings showing the pool’s size, location and enclosure details. That’s one more reason to finish the design in the off-season: the permit drawings come from the design.

How long does pool design take?
It depends on the project. A simple pool and patio can be settled quickly. A full backyard with a pool, cabana, outdoor kitchen, retaining walls and lighting usually takes several rounds of revisions. That’s a good thing: changes on paper are cheap; changes after excavation are not.
Will starting early save me money?
Starting early doesn’t change what materials cost, but it prevents the most expensive kind of change — the one made mid-construction. It also gives you time to compare finishes, phase the project if needed, and make decisions without a crew waiting on you.
Should the pool and landscaping be planned together?
Always. A pool dropped into the middle of a yard, with the patio and gardens figured out later, usually ends up with undersized seating areas, awkward walkways and drainage problems. We plan the pool, interlock and landscaping as one project, built by one team.
What should I have ready for a first consultation?
You don’t need a finished idea. It helps to know:
- How you want to use the backyard (family swimming, entertaining, relaxing)
- Must-haves vs. nice-to-haves
- Any future plans (cabana, hot tub, outdoor kitchen)
- A copy of your property survey, if you have one
